THE FUTURE OF BIOCHEMICAL ENGINEERING IN NIGERIA

It is sad that despite the level of advancement of biotechnology and biochemical engineering and its management globally, Nigeria is lacking behind. Therefore, the need to develop biochemical engineering in Nigeria should be overwhelming and given serious attention.

THE SITUATION AND CHALLENGES

A rapid increase has been observed in water treatment firms in Nigeria. Though the changes have been attributed to the private sector, the government is trying its best to assist. Inadequate management, lack of business infrastructures has marred these approaches. Biochemical engineering has helped in assisting the commercialization of this drinkable water.

The major challenge that the development of biochemical engineering is faced with in Nigeria is lack of technical-know-how viz-a-viz transfer of Technology.

Not many know of the processes and application of biochemical engineering, the few that know are challenged by lack of business infrastructures and research institutes.

Proper backing and support have not been given to it due to the risk involved (private sector) and

Lack of government support. Learning and practicing is hard.

BIOCHEMICAL ENGINEERING AND THE NIGERIAN ECONOMY

For the West Africa sub Nigeria is regarded as the largest and most populated country in Africa. It has a middle income, mixed economy and emerging market, with expanding, financial, service, communication. Technology and entertainment sectors.

It is ranked as the 21st largest economy in the world in terms of nominal GDP, and the 20th largest in terms of purchasing power parity.

It is the largest economy in Africa; it re-emergent, though currently under performing, manufacturing sector is the third largest on the continent and produces a large proportions of goods and services region

WAY FORWARD

Developing biochemical engineering will bring about economic upgrade, opportunities and an increase in material/ manpower resource actualizing this will require an all in presence of the government and private sector to make this possible there should be provision of research institutes, a favorable market and an active regulatory body.

The government and its people should support and back biochemical engineering. Policy agendas should focus on increasing factor conditions to enhance start up formation, biotech cluster evolution, alliances and skilled employment.

Synergy with technologically developed and developing countries for knowledge and technology transfer.

Patriotism towards nation development, negating the menace of corruption and promoting service to humanity with integrity.

CONCLUSION

Applications of biochemical engineering are numerous, overlapping almost all fields of life. The good is that it is a welcome improvement to many.

Emerging industries such as the life science, animal, health, agricultural biotechnology and environmental products offer both a potential for economic growth and improvements in the quality of life, the environment, and industrial productivity. Most countries of the world are seeking to create and enhance biotech entrepreneurship face.
